intro
Oddball mix of the quite promising and awful on debut album from Glasgow-based trio, Golden Grrls
Well, the opening track didn’t impress me, to say the least. The promo sheet that came with the debut album from this Glasgow trio (there are actually two girls and one boy in the band, despite the name) talked about the pop scene in Australia and New Zealand in the 80s, a description that unavoidably got my hopes up. Then I popped the CD into my stereo, and the opening track 'New Pop' sounded more like one of those “we play music even though we can’t handle any instruments” indie pop bands that I really can’t stand. Oh well, I skipped to the next song, and yes… I could really hear some influences from the fantastic NZ band the Bats here… My hopes were getting bigger at once, only to be smashed to pieces again on the third track, 'Paul Simon'. Once again, it’s a very shambling song, with one of those ironic titles, as well. And then it goes on like this – every other song is quite good, and the songs in-between them are… well… annoying. This might have something to do with me being tired of the contemporary indiepop scene. If, however, you are a regular visitor to the pop fests in London or New York or Indietracks, this is certainly something for you. As for me, I won’t be pre-ordering their next album…
