intro
Potentially promising vinyl only debut single from new psychedelic band the Market Square Heroes, ireversably ruined, however, by its weak production
The Market Squares is a collaboration between UK based songwriter Paul Messis and two members of psychedelic baroque pop outfit the Sufis, Calvin Laporte and Evan Smith. Billed as bringing "the next projected sound of 2013" and promising "psychedelic pop vibrations" and "tripped-out-lo fidelity music", these songs were both recorded over a few hours one summer's day in Nashville. And it shows. 'Afternoon Tide' doesn't quite do it for me somehow. The sitar start promises much but the vocals are slightly off key. They lack that smooth finish that would match the music. The track is also so short it feels incomplete. The track backing it, 'Inside My Mind', is, however, better, here. The slightly discordant vocals match the song and the chorus such as it is, invokes memories of 'Eight Miles High' by The Byrds. It achieves the stated aim of the recording much better and bares repeated plays. Still, more speed less haste perhaps next time might show the sound off to better advantage.
