intro
Dreamy folk on beautifully packaged third album from Cambridge-based group, Fuzzy Lights
Fuzzy Lights have been making music since 2004, starting off as a duo and now recording as a five piece. ‘Twin Feathers’, their second album, was released in 2010 and received much critical acclaim. This Cambridgeshire based band return with ‘Rule of Twelfths’, a collection of dreamy, folk songs. On ‘Rule of Twelfths’ the band’s violinist/pianist Rachel Watkins takes on the role of lead vocalist for the majority of the tracks including wonderful opener ‘Summer’s Tale’ where her talents are showcased beautifully. Both ‘The Hour’ and ‘Blind’ also allow Watkins voice to shine. Although I would never recommend judging an album by its cover it is worth mentioning that ‘Rule of Twelfths’ comes with a beautifully illustrated one by Melissa Castrillon that is a piece of art in its own right. ‘Second Skin’ is just over 5 minutes worth of soothing vocals and sweeping violins with string arrangements provided by Watkins and the Iskra quartet (also recently used on The XX album). The song has an almost festive feel about it. I personally feel ‘Fever Dreams’ is the most memorable track on the album. It combines male and female vocals perfectly, creating a mythical, almost otherworldly sound. In fact you can almost imagine climbing into the world created on the CD inlay when you put this track on. Fuzzy Lights have come back with a polished album that will no doubt see several songs included on radio playlists in the coming months. If you enjoy laid back folk with a melodic dreamy sound, I would definitely recommend giving ‘Rule of Twelfths’ a listen.
