intro
Minimalist combination of drones and field recordings on second album from UK ambient musician, Chris Weeks
The first album on the ambient and drone music offshoot label Nibbana, started by Tigerbeat6 Records of breakcore fame and reputation, indeed is a bright enlightment. The first few tracks are drone sounds and gradually the tingling tickles arrive. On 'Sundrops' the mood begins to change from firm but calm to intricate. Chris Weeks was an odd monikor to choose, since musically his album 'A Haunting Sun' describes dawn till dusk, with rain in the afternoon. While perhaps it is the unintentional 2012 soundtrack to 'Ulysses', it, to describe its tone, captures life in a day. A stream of computer-generated sounds evolve as album tracks, but could hardly be considered as separate tracks. 'Slow Light', however, shows enormous momentum, building tension from big sounds. On 'Phosphorescent Hills' the sound is like when you're circling your fingertop around the rim of a glass. At the end of the day, we're drifting ashore, chasing the sun on sea, even when we hear chirping birds. This mute story gets more exciting with the sounds of streaming water on 'Nautical Dusk', which uses pretty much the same drone as before but now in a lighter way. Fittingly, the sunset sounds mellow and tranquil. The drone loop sound winds down whilst you hear the seawaves wax and wane.
