intro
Unique new single from Berlin-born, but now London-based singer-songwriter Roxanne de Bastion, which preludes her debut album which will come out next year
It’s just a two-minute teaser from an album to be released next year and which will be produced by Gordon Raphael (The Strokes/Regina Spektor) in Berlin, but the song, ‘Red and White Blood Cells,’ speaks volumes about the young Roxanne de Bastion. The singer left Berlin for London on a wing and a prayer, with only a one-way ticket and an acoustic guitar, but she was no beginner. Her passion began at the age of ten when she performed Beatles covers and, sustained, five years later, when she began writing originals, drawn from her inspirations: John Lennon, Bob Dylan and Ray Davies. This single shows off her solid, expressive guitar work, which is snugly set against a throbbing bass line. “Will you forgive me?/You can’t trust my sense of direction/I can’t trust my immune system,” are the lyrics she uses to invite us into her quirky hemisphere. “And they dance, dance, dance,” she continues, as we imagine these cells demonstrating a physical mind of their own. Even when her chant gets echoed and exorcised by an eager chorus, her sweet, clear, unwavering voice remains steadfast above the clamour. Roxanne de Bastion’s style is unique and inviting. Hearing the rest of this debut sounds like a lark.
