intro

In the first of three photo shoots of unsigned Liverpool bands, Marie Hazelwood photographs young indie act Freq at a Battle of the Bands contest

Alongside Liverpool Sound City, there is another event called Liverpool Sound City Youth Live which gives a chance for young bands to present their talent. The prize on competition is a slot in the main festival. Just before Christmas local venue The Picket held another its Battle of the Bands heats as part of that competition. Teenage group Freq were winners of that part of the competition. These photos were taken at that gig. Amongst musical influences they mention the Stone Roses, but every single person in the band is into a completely different kind of music. They went to two different schools and met up up a party. Jack Robson – who is the lead singer, bassist and songwriter - and Jack Williams- the lead guitarist– decided to put a band together after twenty minutes of conversation. Then Zach Southern joined the band as a drummer, and after a year came the last piece of the equation – Gavan Jackson on rhythm guitar. They are currently recording an EP, and thinking about touring in the summer.
