intro
Eccentric and eclectic pop on debut album from the Liverpool-based act Lovecraft
"If I were a song, would I be too long?" Lovecraft's angst is rather peculiar. Or silly; "One pill makes you larger and one pill makes you small and I would take them all." Lovecraft is the city idiot, as idiocy is not an exclusive village quality. The sleeve of the album is psychedelic, the songs are exquisite and his performance is perfectly executed chaos. Ten musicians came to the aid of Craig Sinclair, who is psychedelic funster Lovecraft; who likes to be in the spotlight, orchestrating his obstinate pop music to full extent and banging the tambourine alongside the catchy choruses of 'Royal Jelly' going oo-ooh. His best effort from the first half of 'Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad' is 'Mudman's Brunchday' where, as if emerging from a nightmare, Lovecraft carries a summery twang to a merry end. By the time 'The Beast' comes on, you're won over and its brass arrangement might have take you to dreamland. Next, however, a rude awakening comes on 'Jimmy Riddle', throwing in a bit of shout it out electro for good measure. Onto side 2 of this imaginary LP we go with 'Jade' with further proof of Sinclair's talent for composition. Weirdly enough 'Jade' rolls into 'The Telepathist' and then offers next 'Vinegar Tom' which has street organ jollity. Off we go into the album's depths. 'Elevenses' winds up at gale force eleven. 'Uprooting' once more calms down before 'Hell's Teeth' causes a real storm. Guest musicians include Mike Hogan, Dorothy Wave and Ash Lertzak whilst one Geoff Davies sat down to overview the recording of Lovecraft's debut. Lovecraft has rush delivered his rudimentary backbeats and turned them into agit pop chants in such a way that this album simply leaves amazement.
