intro
Predictable, but well-performed twee pop on debut album Let's Whisper, the side project of the Smittens' Dana Kaplan and Colin Clary
Last year, I wrote a review of the Smittens remix album, and there I confessed to not being a very keen fan of their music, a statement that still stands to this day. The reason I’m saying this here, is because Let’s Whisper consists of Dana Kaplan and Colin Clary of that very band, and to my ears this side project sounds more or less like their “main” band, which means that you know what you will get when you buy this album: twee-ish songs and lyrics about making mixtapes, going on picnics and sweet love. And quite frankly, I’m bored with it by now. I know there are a lot of people on the twee scene that love this, and I can understand them. If this record would have been released ten years ago, I would have loved it. I would have included them on mixtapes. I would have asked them for an interview for my fanzine. I would have attended every gig they ever played in Sweden. But ten years have passed, and this doesn’t excite me anymore. With that said, this is good twee pop, and I’m sure their future gigs will be full of indie kids dancing as there were no tomorrow. In some ways, I envy them. In some ways, I don’t.
