Intense, but compelling third full-length album from Swedish post rock group, Jeniferever
The third full-length album from Swedish post-rock band Jeniferever starts off with the title track, ‘Silesia’, in a gloomy, dark wave style that recalls both I Like Trains and the more nocturnal-sounding work of Ennio Morricone. Frontman Kristofer Jönson’s vocals have an element of Neil Tennant from the Pet Shop Boys while its guitars are reminiscent of the Cure. ‘Waifs and Strays’, which was released as a free internet download single, is also like the Cure with its odd bass line, perky keyboards and sharp guitars. It becomes much bigger in sound as it moves along. ‘The Beat of Our Own Blood’ has hints of Radiohead in its angularity, while ‘A Drink to Remember’ is both poetic and soul-searching and absolutely delicious for it. ‘Deception Pass’ is again like an intense Cure, while the epic ‘Cathedral Peak’ is slower, but still soul searching. It takes you on a long journey and one that you become totally lost in. ‘Where the Hills Fall Towards the Ocean’ has a big, doomy sound and is glorious in its intensity. ‘Dover’ is in contrast more of a lightweight pop number and has a vocal from Jönson to match. As it moves on, it becomes both more dance-orientated and dreamy in sound. The final track, ‘Hearths’, lasts for nine minutes and another Cure-influenced number is slow and doomy, bringing this wonderful album to a fantastic end. A first-rate album!
