intro
...and on the last Darren Hayman and the Secondary Modern, the Wave Pictures and the Leaf Library
Tonight sees the close of the first real gigs of the year of importance. Newcomers Leaf Library open the night with songs that sound in the vein of Stereolab, but without an essence of Frenchness about them. Their album, 'Different Activities, Similar Divisions', is free as a download or alternatively you can offer them whatever you want to pay for it. The Wave Pictures follow. They are real stars with clever, well-delivered songs. They also have a strong chemistry stage and are even good-looking as well. They are perfect really, a little like Hefner but much tighter. On the subject of Hefner, Darren Hayman and his latest band, the Secondary Modern, headline. From the outset he reveals that he is not living in his old band's shadow, The show starts off with a song about a sixty year old witch, who is singing a song to her dog before being hauled off to be burned at the stake. There are songs as well about big fish in small ponds and lesbians in between which he tells great tales. He has set himself a task of writing and releasing a new song every day in January and the encore is 'Today's Encore'. It is an excellent, joke-ridden set. The last three nights have been a perfect way to drag in the new year, even if feeling ill. Thank you, Fortuna Pop!
