Love And Money - Velocity, Dunfermline, 15/1/2011

intro

At a low key, but memorable gig to road test their forthcoming second album, Tony Gaughan at Velocity in Dunfermline finds the new line-up of Glasvegas to be on fantastic form

This is the last of a batch of low key gigs to road test the new record 'Euphoric///Heartbreak\\\' and take the show to small towns who would not normally get a chance to witness the Glasvegas experience on their own doorstep. Their self titled debut shifted in bucket loads and all eyes and ears are on the band to hear the new material up close. Velocity holds about 600 and it is packed out long before Glasvegas come on. The stage is set complete with an illuminated vocal mic. There are also keyboards left and right and a shiny new drumkit which is a fair bit different from previous drummer Caroline McKay's collection of toms. Glasvegas hit the stage to a rapturous welcome, cranking straight into a brand new tune from their brand new album, the single 'The World is Yours'. Swedish replacement Jonna Lofgren is well up on the mix and it's sounding great! Front man James Allan has also dropped the guitar, leaving cousin Rab with all the guitar duties tonight. James appears to slouch a lot over the mic. This evidently helps his vocal delivery and things are working out rather well. The oldies are delivered with a new vigour thanks to the animated Jonna giving a new life to 'Geraldine' and 'Daddy's Gone'. There is a swagger to bassist Paul Donoghue who appears to have been let off the leash. 'Euphoria','Take My Hand' and the fantastic 'Shine Like Stars' make it look like the band are heading in the right direction and a total rework of 'Flowers and Football Tops' is delivered on keyboards only which again gives it new life. 'Go Square Go' and 'Ice Cream Van' from the debut end an entirely memorable night.
