Stripped down and raw angry noise rock on forceful fifth album from Chicago-based post-rock group Shipping News
The fifth album from Chicago-based post-rock group Shipping News, 'One Less Heartless to Fear', is a stripped down, as-live recording featuring 9 new tracks of angry noise rock. Fans of Shellac, Fugazi, Slint or their offspring The For Carnation should find this very much to their liking. This is an album of angry, dark music, with discordant guitars screeching over thunderous drums and bass, with lyrics chanted and barked underneath. Though all of the tracks have something to offer, the band really come into their own when they pick up the pace and get really angry, as on ‘The Delicate’, which starts with an aggressive, driving rhythm and builds to a powerful climax. At times, the band do get a little softer – ‘Axons and Dendrites’ is a much more melodic track, for example – and prove themselves to be just as adept when they take down the pace and volume, as well as giving the listener a bit of respite from the otherwise highly energetic record. Shipping News formed in the mid-90s, and this album sounds like it could have been recorded back then – it is very much a hark-back to the post-punk sound of that time. But rather than a dated throwback, 'One Less Heartless to Fear' is a welcome reminder of just how good the post-punk scene was at its peak.
