intro
Cinematic dubstep on debut album from Leeds-based producer Jack Sparrow, which appears in radically different CD and triple LP versions
Leeds-based dubstep producer R. Gath records music under the moniker of Jack Sparrow and under this guise on this debut album he flirts with many different styles of dance music. Bass music is an organic daily routine on 'Circadian'. The two physical releases differ. As per usual, the vinyl set does not include those singles that have been previously released. These include 'The Chase'(which gallops in spooky and tribal style) and 'Terminal' (which features big deep house synthesizer beeps) whilst the closing track on the CD, 'Regress', might crop up later on a DJ platter. The 3 LP set ends with 'Subterranean' featuring on tablas Indi Kaur, who like Gath, is from Leeds. The vinyl format ends with a good bang. Described as psytrance, on CD this slippery and wobbling 'Subterranean', builds up so that by its middle it has the haunting beauty of earlier track 'Shoal'. His dubstep-trance is very cinematic, particularly on 'Dune' (probably indeed the film) 'Relapse' lounges on before the quirky CD-only track 'Regress' brings innovative dubstep that will break a leg or two on the dancefloor. A bit too much on CD, and running for almost an hour, 'Circadian' forms an excellent triple set and starts with the soulful 'Loveless' and the mighty driving rickety-tick beat of 'Dread' on the B-Side. 'Salvation' on side C is skanking tech business and then flip the record for sci-fi sub dubstep on 'Shoal'. 'Dune' and 'Relapse' come on the third platter. Out now.
