intro

Pleasantly disturbing second album put together on a journey across the northern Mediterranean from Australian experimental duo, Spartak

Neither Greek nor Italian, Spartak's 'Verona' album was brewn down under. Yet the names used here hint at a longing for a forlorn land- and soundscape. The album captures a journey from Northern Italy to Northern Catalunya. But Spartak, as in ancient Greece, does not play a role here. Very much used to travelling very long distances, the Spartak duo of Australia's Shoeb Ahmad and Evan Dorrian assembled sonic drones during their trip across the northern Mediterranean coastline. The end result proves to be a contradiction in terms. 'Verona' is a disturbing album by nature, yet it also has a calming quality. At under 45 minutes, the eight tracks take you through a desolate and desert like soundscape. The cinematic quality of 'Verona' resembles this preconception. The album's sonics resonate these impressions, yet through the tweaking and twiddling by Spartak, 'Verona' is portrayed by unitalian aliens pur sang. File next to 'Paris, Texas'. As in pleasantly disorientating.
