intro
Catchy and also enormously entertaining download only re-release of single from Glaswegian electronic/dance group, A Band Called Quinn
A Band Called Quinn are a Glaswegian electronic/dance group centred around vocalist Louise Quinn, drummer/producer Bal Cooke, Robert Henderson on electronics and bassist Steven Westwater. The group have released three albums previously, two of them ‘Inbetween Worlds’ (2001) and ‘Luss’ (2006) under the moniker of Quinn, and the latest,‘Sun Moon Stars’, which came out last year on Glasgow-based label, Neon Tetra Records, as A Band Called Quinn. They include Madonna amongst their fans and have received excellent reviews, but have not yet broken into the mainstream. ‘DIY’ was originally also released last year, but, short listed from 600 applications, is now being reissued as a download as part of Storm The Charts, a new campaign from the people who spearheaded Rage Against the Machine topping the charts at Christmas time over X Factor winner Joe McElderry. The aim of Storm The Charts is to increase more awareness of independent music by tyring to put forty indie acts into the UK singles chart during the week beginning the 4th July. Henderson’s funky spirals of keyboards and Cooke’s sturdy drum beats kick off ‘DIY’ before the rest of the “live” instrumentation, a rattling bass line, and towards the end, a trumpet also slide into the mix. The crystal-voiced Louise Quinn meanwhile comes up with one of the most insistent choruses of recent memory with “Why don’t you do it yourself?/DIY/Do it yourself.” Catchy, enormous fun, and matched by a hilarious video, ‘DIY’ will hopefully bring this still under-rated Glaswegian group to a much wider audience.
