She and Him - Volume Two

If you’re a fan of 60’s girl groups like the Shangri-Las or the Chiffons, or modern bands like Tilly and theWall, you’ll more likely than not be a fan of She and Him. Volume 2 – which as you might have guessed, is Zooey Deschanel and M Ward’s second collaborative release – is 13 tracks of sunshine pop arriving just in time to clear away any lingering memories of the harsh winter, and set our sights on the glorious summer ahead. Well, I say glorious summer. It’ll probably rain from June through September, and then start snowing again. But at least you can listen to songs as lovely as ‘Lingering Still’, ‘Me and You’, ‘Home’, or single ‘In the Sun’. In fact, to be honest all these songs are thoroughly lovely and if you’ve got any sort of soul at all I am in no doubt you’ll love it. There are a couple of fine covers alongside Deschanel’s equally fine original songs, with ‘Ridin’ in my Car’ (originally released in 1977 by NRBQ) and the wonderful ‘Gonna Get Along Without You Now’ (perhaps most famously sung by 50s popettes Patience and Prudence). If you’ve ever seen one of Zooey Deschanel’s films and thought “Oh god I love you” then listening to this album will probably not help cure you of your condition ( and I’m sure M Ward’s quite lovely too). To sum up: She & Him – Volume 2. I like it.
