intro
Anna Gudaniec photographs Scottish singer-songwriter and former Arab Strap guitarist Malcolm Middleton at an acoustic solo at the Borderline in London
The former guitarist with Arab Strap, Scottish singer-songwriter Malcolm Middleton has now released five albums under his own name, ‘5.14 Fluoxytine Seagull Alcohol John Nicotine’ (2002) ,‘Into the Woods’ (2005), ‘A Brighter Beat’ (2007), ‘Sleight of Heart’(2008) and ‘Waxing Gibbous’(2009). Middleton has often found himself branded as a miserabilist, and has written with wry, deprecating wit of his lack of self-confidence as a songwriter, nights on the booze, and his enjoyment at staying in on his own. ‘Waxing Gibbous’, which Middleton has announced will be the last record under his own name, is slightly more upbeat and less morose than his other solo, revealing a love of naff 70’s pop and prog rock edge. He has been promoting 'Waxing Gibbous'by playing shows both with a backing band and also in acoustic solo sets. These intimate photographs of Malcolm Middleton were taken at an acoustic show at the Borderline in London on 25th January exclusively for Pennyblackmusic by Anna Gudaniec.
