intro
We profile our first Penny Black Music Bands Night in two years, which will take place on Saturday November 14th at the London Brixton Windmill and feature sets from the Left Outsides, Madam,Mathew Sawyer and the Ghosts and the European
After a two-year absence, before which we celebrated ten fine nights at the late, much-lamented Spitz venue in east London, Pennyblackmusic is delighted to announce a return to the live scene - this time south of the river, at the Brixton Windmill at 22 Blenheim Gardens, London, SW2. 5BZ. We will be putting on a very special night of acts on Saturday 14th November 2009. Tickets will be £5 on the door and £4.50 in advance from www.wegottickets.com with doors opening at 8 p.m. The Left Outsides Labelled “introspective folk, tinged with subtle inventiveness” by 'Uncut' Magazine and “dreamy folksy psychedelia” by the London 'Metro', the Left Outsides have an outstanding musical pedigree that includes time in the legendary Comet Gain, the Eighteenth Day of May, Track & Field favourites Saloon and Kicker, and Matthew Sawyer and the Ghosts (also on the bill tonight). Reference points include the ethereal folk-rock of Espers; the droning jangles of the Brian Jonestown Massacre; the gauzy chime of the Clientele; and the innocent psychedelia of early Pink Floyd and solo Syd Barratt. The band have supported the likes of Damon and Naomi among others, and have released their debut album ‘And Colours In Between’ on Transistor Records. Don’t miss. www.myspace.com/theleftoutsides www.theleftoutsides.com Madam Madam is a project of singer/songwriter/producer Sukie Smith (though she will be playing with a full band for this gig). She has recorded and performed with some amazing musicians including Chris Clarke, Adam Franklin, Gavin Pearce, Simon Breed, Marc Tchanz, Mara Carlyse, Jeff Townsin, Moose, Brock Norman Brock, Lee Tryming, Howard Monk, Sean Reed, Jon Redfern, Patrick Durkan and Johnny Guitar. Music for outlaws, cowboys and glamour girls who won’t give up on their idea of perfect love… a “fragile voiced chanteuse” according to 'Time Out'…Madam have an album under their belt entitled 'In Case of Emergency' and Sukie has just completed a soundtrack for the debut feature film of Neophyte Films: 'Hush Your Mouth', an urban ghost story…”unexpected and heartbreaking” music. www.myspace.com/madammusic www.madam.org.uk Mathew Sawyer and the Ghosts Mathew Sawyer has been many things in his time. Formerly the drummer for post-punk legends the Television Personalities, he’s an established visual artist, and also leads the Ghosts, whose album ‘Blue Birds Blood’ has been released by Stolen Records, and described by legendary music journalist Everett True thus: “filled with riotous harmonies and self-deprecating observation, wistfulness and the kind of croaky voice that, frankly, makes me go weak at the knees”. Conjuring up the demons unleashed by artists such as Smog, Silver Jews, and Nick Cave at his finest, Sawyer’s lyrics are characterised by his eccentric, bruised view of life, accompanied by reverbed acoustic guitar and his backing band. www.myspace.com/theghostsmyspace www.matthewsawyer.co.uk The European The European is the consummate European. The European is a one-man musical genius, a close friend of Enya, and a former member of the NATO-sponsored Icebreaker International. The European plays a mean Q-Chord (formerly known as an Omnichord). The European blends synth-pop genius, wry lyricism, and avant-garde structures that recall Philip Glass and Stockhausen at their finest. You will not be disappointed, unless there is something very wrong with you, in which case you will. www.myspace.com/iamtheeuropean
