intro
Fiery debut EP from up-and-coming and new South London-based indie guitar band Silversky
Silversky are a new indie guitar band from South London with a taut, anthemic sound. They have been attracting good reviews for their energetic live shows, and are on record and their download only debut EP, 'The Trinity Sessions' a similarly fiery presence. Mike Appleton (guitars),John Sampson (bass)and Les McKay all know how to create killer hooks, but what makes Silversky really stand out from the herd of other guitar bands out there is the Morrissey-style yodelling vocals and tragicomic wit of singer Pete Smith. An ode in part to the most gentle country in the world, a scathing attack on the home and foreign policy of consecutive governments across the globe at another, 'I Want to Live in Norway', possibly the stand-out track on what is a very strong EP, merges jangling guitars and a sudden raucous solo from Appleton with a blackly hilarious lyric from Smith (“I want to live in Norway/I don’t want to live in Basra/I don’t want to be bombed by the USA”). The other two tracks on ‘The Trinity Sessions’ are ‘Requiem’, a grinding, guttural rocker with a piercing harmonica solo which warns of false prophets, whether in religion or politics (“I think I’ll burn my bra”quips Smith), and ‘Dorian Gray’, which named after Smith’s favourite book, is a somewhat slower-paced, but epic-in-tone indie guitar number and that, as well as being about Oscar Wilde’s hedonistic protagonist, with gallows humour also examines the issue of plastic surgery (“Can you count backwards from 100 down to 10, then I’ll take my scalpel and start you all over once again ?”). This is a fine debut from a gifted group who have the potential to do very well.

Completely agree with that review - I saw them at a gig in Camden and they are even better live.
