intro
At a showcase gig to promote their second album, 'Replica Sun Machine', Sarah Johnson watches distinctive electronic folk trio the Shortwave Set, despite their stage show involving some very complex-looking technology, play a flawless set
The Soho Revue Bar is a fantastic venue but it has the strangest layout which seems to encourage everyone to stand right at the back of the room. Everyone managed to stay as far from the stage as possible throughout both of the support acts but thankfully by the time the Shortwave Set arrived on the stage the venue was heaving and the crowd swarmed around the stage. The set list crammed in songs from their new album, 'Replica Sun Machine', as well as the band's debut, 'The Debt Collection', re-working samples into the live act through a complex-looking laptop hooked up to a keyboard and decks. Vocals from both Ulrika Bjorsne and Andrew Pettitt were flawless while David Farrell brought the distinctive electronic folk sound together. The show went down well with the crowd who made a lot of noise for an encore, but sadly time was limited and after a fairly short set the band left fans wanting more. The gig provided a taster of what the new album has to offer however and proved the band to be as good live as they are on record, so if you get the chance to see them at a summer festival don’t miss out.
