intro
Optimistic-sounding first single from New York bliss-rockers Asobi Seksu's long awaited second album, 'Citrus'
After two years waiting in the wings 'Citrus', the second record from New York bliss-rockers Asobi Seksu, is finally finding release in the United Kingdom through One Little Indian Records. Thursday is the first single taken from the record and captures the essence of the band in a neat little three minute package. Throughout all manner of technical wizardry the band evoke the most luxurious, natural sounding textures;a paradox which sits at the centre of the band. Whilst sounding utterly natural and fresh, there sound is heavily layered, manipulated and reinterpreted through a myriad of machines to produce one shimmering whole. In the case of Thursday these techniques have been used to create a wonderful pop track. A melodic bass introduction is given only a few seconds of stage time in which to impress before the overwhelming vocal presence of Yuki Chikudate sweeps down from the clouds. And although Haji on bass is given support by drummer Mitch Spivak, it is Chikudate who carries the track from here on in, flying above the music in an heady mix of amorous temptation and poetic lyricism. This contribution lifts the single above a lot of post My Bloody Valentine dross that has been termed a shoegaze revival in recent months, and places Thursday on a pedestal as a quintiscential summer track; invigorating, optimistic, beautiful.
