The Headlines are a new five piece band from Manchester. At a support date at the Fierce Panda and Pointy Records-sponsored Club Fandango at Dublin Castle in London, Olga Sladeckova finds their music radiating with energy

It’s just past 8 o’clock and my friends and I are walking along the busy road leading up to the Dublin Castle. It’s been at least a year since I have been in this Camden pub so I wonder how much it’s changed. The door man is certainly welcoming, the crowded entrance a little less… It also surprises me how young tonight’s crowd is. The average age must be floating somewhere around 15 or at least it looks like that. Tonight is the Club Fandango night which is put on every Tuesday by Fierce Panda and Pointy Records. It is basically a night for new, but up-and-coming bands. It’s a great place to be if you don’t want to miss the future Razorlight, Killers or Coldplay. Although I can’t say I am the biggest fan of the mainstream scene in Britain. Tonight we have come to see the Headlines – note the capital H. The band aren’t, however, headlining yet. In fact, tonight they are an opening act which puzzles me a little as we enter the main concert hall at the back of the pub, and barely manage to squeeze in. The Headlines are a Manchester based 5 piece band who radiate with energy and so does their music. The drummer Duncan Willis is sitting in a corner of the stage and smashing his drums against the rhythm of the Headlines new song ‘Cruel Escape’. Singer Pete Broadhead's s voice is steady but springy. As he sings he constantly moves up and down, side to side, over and over again. It probably explains why he is so thin! But let’s be more serious. The Headlines sound great and the fans tonight appreciate every song with loud applause and a few odd screams. The band continues their gig with another energetic song, ‘Fight Game’. The tune is very fast but not at all flat. From time to time the drums step in, then Pete takes over. Both are supported throughout by the snappy guitars of Rob Richards, Dan Spedding and Andy Proudfoot. No one can say whether this band will hit the bigger stages one day, but they definitely have the potential.
