Black Dice - Broken Ear Record
Label: DFA Records
Format: CD

intro

Impressive new album from art rockers and latest EMI signings Black Dice, who merge bustling urban sounds with tribal minimalism

One glance at the sleeve and it's official: Black Dice have sold out. The copyright control disclaimer on the front is printed vertically so it could even resemble a blocked erection! And when you peel it off, the sticker glued over the left thigh of a pussycat, as seen from the back, will provide a few naughty thoughts. To entertain you furthermore with useless texts, there are still more disclaimers on the backside. Golly, at EMI some employees truly are obsessed! This manner of packaging can really put one off. Proclaim how excellent your product is and at the same hint at the impossibility to copy the content.Well, weren't you about to lure me into buying it? Why bother about copycats in such an inescapable fashion? It's like selling condoms with the disclaimer reading not to use them for rape. It would not have been a case if 'Broken Ear Record' had not mattered at all, and could be flushed away together with the usual EMI turds. Black Dice pull together the same tricks as on their previous records, but this time with richer arrangements and with more striking samples. 'Broken Ear Record' is a steamroller of an album clocking in at just 40 minutes. Black Dice have added great bustling urban sounds to their tribal minimalism and filtering through on 'Broken Ear Record' are smashing belters like the single 'Smiling Off'. The other highlight is 'Street Dude' where an upfront rhythm pattern seems to be disturbed with the sound of junctions of guitar boulevards and elektro bleep alleys. The closing 'Twins' and 'Motorcycle' follow on that same routine, but in a more explicit manner as if in a parade. Black Dice get as dubby and clubby as they can without giving up their art school aesthetics. File under Sonic Youth meets Jeff Mills. Whatever.
