intro
Stunning combination of self-produced sounds and samples on fifth album from Brooklyn-based noise experimentalists, Black Dice
The sounds from Black Dice's previous album 'Load Blown' were, to some extent, still resonating in my ear channels when the 'Repo' album arrived in the mail. Dandy noise extremists that they are, 'Repo' offers new merry-go-round mayhem entirely made from sounds that New York's Black Dice have uniquely reproduced themselves from homemade instruments and other assorted devices themselves. 'Repo' mashes up self-produced bits and pieces with very brief moments of found noises and Black Dice dish these up on a wildly, widely varied platter made from junk sound ingredients. You may not think of Black Dice as being witty and very funk. Listening to 'Repo', I could not, however, help but chuckle, grin and jump about in a vaguely controlled rhythmical manner. 'Repo' is all about disciplined disorientation unless you bear in mind their preceeding recordings. Then you recognize 'Repo' as one magnificently big joke. 'Repo' starts by toying with the concept of funk and industrial cabaret, before seventh track 'Lazy TV' challenges those vogueish dubstep riddims, just in time to meddle with the chaos from the sampling extravaganza. 'Chicken Shit' brings on gabber noise like it could never have been produced in gabber's native Rotterdam. Next, so-called folktronics get a good seeing to on 'Vegetable'. One can imagine Animal Collective trying to find the nearest big stone to creep under. 'Meriweather Post Pavilion' compares to 'Repo' as 'Hotel California' does 'Trout Mask Replica'. Penultimate tarck 'Ultra Vomit Craze' pukes out an even bigger dubby techno industrial mess and Black Dice's masterful touch shows its true merit as it cuts it all short, paving the way for a snappy, stumbling grand finale on 'Gag Shack' with snippets of a Grandmaster Flash type of cut-ups. 'Repo' contains an absurd level of abundance in sound and combines this with delicious trash, assembled from places most of us underdogs would never dare to sniff at. This album is likely to set the standard for albums that follow in its footsteps.

New York ensemble and Fat Cat signings Black Dice recently toured Britain with their experimental music. Emma Haigh is enthralled by a show that is both "spontaneously individual, and strangely conversant between it’s three performers" at the London Spit |
