intro
Strong third album from power trio Acid King, which will be enjoyed by fans of doom rock
Doom metal is a type of music that works within a fairly rigid set of parameters: Slow, huge distortion and thumping drums … in a few words, Black Sabbath on Quaaludes. Such simple rules make it easy for a band to do it up right, but hard to do it well. Acid King is one of the few that manage to harness the grind without boring the listener. Acid King manage to hew to the formula of crawling, mega-fuzz guitar riffs, but they also offer something a bit different with singer guitarist Lori S. providing some clean vocals (albeit ones that sound like they were recorded at the bottom of a deep, dark cavern). The power trio is rounded out by Joey Osbourne, whom has been with the band from the beginning, and Guy Pinhas, best known for his work on the big strings in Goatsnake. You couldn’t ask for a more thud-friendly rhythm section. The band’s lyrics would no doubt find a home on the iPod of any apocalyptic bikers out there, with references to black skies, two-wheeled nations, heavy loads and deadly knives. 'III' is a good album that doom fans should look out for.
