With a career starting as early as 1981, Eek-A-Mouse - a weird artist name for a six foot six dude - must be well into his 40's. On the newly subventioned Real Authentic Sounds label, the man Hylton a.k.a. Eek-A-Mouse comes on so bluntly that a more staggering affair is unlikely to be witnessed soon. On 'Schizophrenic' - also included as a Tricky remix with a superior remix from the very same Bristol triphop star for the excellent 'Jamaicanese' - Eek-A-Mouse gives full insight to the wildest bent of his mind wandering thoughts. 'Mouse Gone Wild' kicks off with loads of violence yet soon enough becomes a greatly disturbed mix-up of testeron wild play, self-acclaimed schizophrenia and an original mix of urban ska. With Doctor Dread at the controls, the production is kept to the bare essentials, leaving all of the attention to The Great Mouse. The absolute ingenuity of his babbling and toasting may be best cited from 'Divas'; "Mrs Clinton, my name is Ripton. Let's book a room at the Hilton." This follows some of the zaniest speech you'll hear this side of 2005's crap hip-hop and dancehall. Most typically, it's the tracks with an odd number that build the bizarre red thread to 'Mouse Gone Wild'. It may seem like a bland, useless, horny shout out to Hill Clinton but this Mr Hylton stands a better chance than any of you or me. Eek-A-Mouse goes on, telling about with greater detail which he shall show you, when and how. In the end though I felt a little sad after the amount of bewilderment. It's such a f**king shame he's never recorded with Lee Perry in both of their primes. A schizo top banana with the coolest JA music head.
