intro
Entertaining new release from the hip-hop influenced Boca 45, which takes twin inspiration from both Latin American football and 70's funk
A project similar to the Arakatuba singles and album on Mr Bongo from 1998, Boca 45 is about Latin American football. A couple of years before Depthcharge got in to this football craze, while a little later Bristol's drum and bass dons Scorpio released 'Division 1' as a twelve inch on Full Cycle. Somehow with its music, Bristol compensates for a lack of a Premier League football team! This makes a change from fantasy football. Moreover with Boca 45 it's much better fun. The opening tracks, despite one having the title of 'Ultra!', are slow. Boca 45's 'Pitch Sounds' start at 33 RPM, but, however, subsequently settle for a yet slower pace. The oozing 70's funk then serves a different purpose. 'Pitch Sounds' link to turntable memorabilia equally well. It's a self-described "fascinating journey into well-being." This apt description can be read as 'lounge' rather than rampaging noises from the stands. But Boca 45 - a one man project by one Mr Handy - does execute counter plays from the vaults of the 2nd hand vinyl archive, which is very popular with sampling DJs these days. As the album progresses the Boca 45 speed on; most notably on 'In The City' plus 'Without A Doubt' whose perchance would be two home goals. The hip hop feel to these tracks works very well on a sophisticated platter dished up with fonky nostalgia. Like with fantasy football, 'Pitch Sounds' is a home win but a well deserved one, and with no goals conceded. Thankfully on record Boca 45 thrives less on clichés than I do in reviews.
