BS 2000 is the side project of Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz(, who has got together with his friend Amery Smith. This is their debut single together, a four track seven inch , all the songs on which have been taken from their imminent debut album 'Simply Moritified'. Often 'side projects' can be read as a code phrase for wealthy rock stars mucking about and producing unlistenable rubbish. Thankfully that is not the case here, although one could observe that BS 2000 are, at times, indeed mucking about. Opening track 'Buddy' is simply astonishing. It is a hip-hop number which on first appearances doesn't really appear to veer that much from the traditional Beastie Boys style. BS 2000, however, manage to concoct a mid-sixties mod vibe with the aid of a catchy and powerful melody, and the track as a whole reminded me of Pavement. Quite how this was done I don't know, but it sounds fantastic. This is not, however, the standout track. The honours go to 'The Scrappy'. This sounds most like the Beastie Boys out of the four songs, concentrating for the most part on beats and vocals, and it is simple but effective and excellent. Elsewhere the band show off influences from rock, electronica and beyond but don't submerge the fact that BS 2000 is basically good time party music with an eclectic edge. I can't wait for the full album!
