Cinerama, featuring David Gedge who used to be in the Wedding Present, appear to have fitted nicely into the group of bands that, despite reasonable sales and regular slots on John Peel, don't seem to be able to find a place in the more mainstream rock press such as NME. But this does not mean that they do not make good records. While I would not say it is as good as their classic single,'Pacific', from last year, 'Lollabrigida', their new single and one of the tracks of their new album 'Disco Volante', is anopther strong record. One of the tracks' best features are David Gedge's vocals that are delivered incredibly gently and often break into a Jarvis Cocker style whisper. The song itself really comes alive, however, when Gedge is joined by female backing vocals from keyboardist Sally Murrell and it becomes a stunning pop song. The track builds up to this from a gentle, though reasonably uptempo, opening verse into a multi layered chorus built around drums and various keyboards. There is no misery or angst here! In many ways Cinerama remind me of Black Box Recorder (recent chart successes featuring Luke from the Auteurs), but they do not come across as being over clever or desperate to be a pop band. Cinerama do not lack emotion and they do not sound as if they are working to a formula. To conclude this is not utterly outstanding, but in a year when independent music has produced some fantastic records it still stands out. They are a very talented group who really do sound inventive and original. There is no need to compare this band to what David Gedge has done in the past.

Honestly, I didn’t even want to go to the Cinerama concert. It was the last day of my life as I knew it, and it wasn’t going well. With nine people crammed into our 5-bedroom flat, we’d had to arrange a shower schedule – which meant I woke up at 6:4 |
