From the navel-gazing drawl of 'North West Five', to the sardonic swirl of 'Clever Girl' the debut CD from Bish is a quirkily familiar journey through the wonderful world of indie pop. There are no alarms and no surprises, just favourite-jumper warm guitar tunes wrapped around moderately catchy lyrics. Deftly turning phrases like, “the men they all like you / the boys are not so sure” singer/songwriter Darryl Hunt invests the loping tunes with just the right amounts of wit, and love-struck blues. This is Saturday afternoon music – the sort of CD to paint the sonic backdrop to quiet hours and contemplative moments. It is not, however, a CD with which to begin revolutions. For all its shuffling, would-be off-beat charm, Bish fails to capture the imagination. Though imminently listenable, the record is just a shade too pleasant for its own good. With overtones of everyone from Lloyd Cole, to Monaco, to Coldplay, this is a CD that everyone will like, but few will be inspired to love
