Thoughtful 70's retro pop on first album in four years from St. Vincent, the project of Texas-raised singer-songwriter Annie Clark
Four years after her acclaimed electropop album ‘Masseduction’, Texas-raised singer-songwriter Annie Clark has just released ‘Daddy’s Home’, her sixth album. Clark, who took the name St. Vincent from a song by Nick Cave, takes a change of direction on this new collection, moving away from electronic rock to embrace soft vocal harmonies and sleepy retro-pop. The jazzy ’Daddy’s Home’ references the release from prison of her stockbroker father, who had served nine years for his part in an illegal stock manipulation scheme. In the title track, Clark examines the impact of his imprisonment on the family: ”You did some time/Well, I did some time too” she sings, laconically pointing out: “ Well, hell, where can you run when the outlaw’s inside you?” The 14-track album carries the imprint of 1970s New York music, reflecting the musical influence her father had on her, being the one to introduce her to classic rock, soul and pop. The collection also focuses on her experiences as a woman in the music business. Produced by co-writer Jack Antonoff, who gave a vintage flavour to albums by Lana Del Rey, ‘Daddy’s Home’ resonates to the sound of electric piano and rich vocal harmonies. Highlights include: the funk opener ‘Pay Your Way In Pain’; the soulful, vintage ‘Down and Out Downtown’; the assertive anti-abuse ‘Down’ with its compelling in- your-face lyrics: ”Get off your own shit, get off of my tit” and infectious groove; and the cathartic …’At the Holiday Party’ opening quietly with acoustic guitar and building to a crescendo with horns and chanting. An album pulsating with raw energy, striding a colourful landscape of funk grooves and sultry soulful jams, this latest collection by Clark will undoubtedly attract new fans to this enterprising musician.

St Vincent, the moniker for American musician Annie Clark, has won much acclaim for her debut album, 'Marry Me'. Chris O' Toole finds St Vincent's set rewarding, but over complicated and too unpredictable at the Bush Hall in London |
