intro
Fabulous third album from Scott and Charlene's Wedding, the project of Australian-born but now New York-based singer-songwriter Craig Dermody
Scott and Charlene's Wedding are based around the feelings and driven energy of Craig Dermody, who having been brought up in Australia wanted to taste the excitement of the Big Apple. This is his third great album in a row and his first since 'Any Port in a Storm' which was released in 2013. 'Maureen' opens the album, and hits all the right spots in my head, It is reminiscent of 'Loaded'-era Velvet Underground and Television in its drive, and sounds more New York than if it was delivered by a local. 'Don't Bother Me', is very dry indie pop, delivered in Darren Hayman style, and reveals Craig growing disillusionment with what is his now new home. 'Hardest Years' in contrast is a song about his former country and of hot summer afternoons, which most people associate with happiness, but for Craig he can't get away fast enough from. 'Scrambled Eggs' is a story of daily life and routine played out across the breakfast bar, I love the combination of the oh so perfect bass, guitars and drums on this. They are liquid perfection and Craig has on it a vocal deliverance that recalls New York's finest lost son, Lou Reed. 'End of the Story' returns to a Velvets/Television coolness, It has minimal vocals that sound like the experimental John Lennon of the late 1960s and early 1970s. 'Bush' is hypnotically slow, and, with its jangly guitars, it tells stories of back home and the family he left behind. 'Distracted' is a solid story about being single in your mid 30s, hanging around with only channelled TV for company. 'Delivered' is more full on in its passion and fury, while 'Forever and a Day' is a beautiful acoustic duet, and, based around piano and guitar, is completely different for the band but rounds off a fabulous third album.

Richard Lewis is riveted by Australian-formed but New York-based group Scott and Charlene's Wedding's shambolic but yet surprisingly tight brand of alternative rock at a show on their first UK tour at the Shipping Forecast in Liverpool |
