Films of Colour are a British,alternative rock band which is fronted by vocalist Andy Clutterbuck. Andy and lead guitarist, James Hatcher, first formed the band as a duo before adding James Rees-Flynn, as the drummer, and Jack Allinson, on bass. They have frequently appeared at British Music Fests, such as the one held at the Isle of Wright and at many popular venues in the UK. Because of their raw, exciting energy and contagious guitar hooks, they have drawn comparisons to Radiohead and Coldplay. But their choice of cover material is what really drew attention to the quartet. Earlier in 2011 they released a cover version of ‘Slow Burn’ - a song penned by David Bowie, and which had appeared on his 2001 album, “Heathen.” This cover version attracted the attention of Bowie’s producer, the acclaimed Tony Visconti. The producer was so intrigued by the intensity and quality of the arrangement that he showcased it on Bowie’s website. While both versions are memorable, they are completely different. Bowie’s version is performed with his famed, low burr and put forth with a steady beat. Films of Colour’s version features Clutterbuck’s emotionally wrenching, but gorgeous falsetto against Hatcher’s self-assured, dynamic strumming. Films of Colour’s take is largely more cinematic – more reflective of a virtual wall of sound, while Bowie’s version is visceral, but utilitarian, more like that of a great, garage band. Visconti stated, after hearing the cover version: “I knew the song because I produced it with David Bowie on his 2001 album 'Heathen'. But Films of Colour had altered it so much they had clearly made it their own. I think Bowie is one of the most difficult artists to cover since his versions of his own compositions seem to be the definitive versions. After I heard Films of Colour’s version I was completely won over.” Visconti, who rarely takes unsigned acts seriously, flew to London immediately to hear the band perform. One phrase from ‘Slow Burn’ might sum up succinctly all that has transpired since that moment: “These are the days – these are the strangest of all.” But, in essence, the world now has two exciting versions of an unbeatable song. By the time this article is published, ‘Slow Burn’ will be available to the public.
