intro
Dramatic and epic-sounding new wave electronica on debut album from Toronto-based act Austra, the project of opera-trained singer Katie Stelmanis
Austra is the trio of singer, programmer and gifted child Katie Stelmanis, who released a solo album two years ago; Maya Postepski on drums and bassist Dorian Wolf, all of whom are from Toronto. Katie Stelmanis trained as an opera singer as a kid and provides the perfect educational background for Austra who play drama-ridden new wave music. She decided not go to a music college though, and taught herself to compose electronic music. Need I say she has a wonderful voice? Firm and pure, her voice fits the epic qualities of this album like a glove. The album's first classic is found on the second track 'Lose It' which, combining lines from 'Small Town Boy' and 'O, Superman', has immediate chart appeal. The bubble and bounce in her synth pop only serves a disguise for her compositional cuckoo talent. It is too early days to tell if she is Lady Gaga of Indie, but her apt mix of computer and human lessons certainly hints at a great talent, with plenty more to come.
