intro
Anthony Strutt enjoys Los Angeles' all girl band band the Dum Dum Girls' gritty garage rock at a show at Cargo in London
The Dum Dum Girls are fronted by Kirsten Gundred, who is a former member of Grand Ole Party and is now known as Dee Dee Penny. The Dum Dum Girls, who are an all girl Los Angeles four piece band, are the latest signings to Sub Pop. Tonight we get a twelve song set, which starts with the old standard. ‘Play With Fire’, and in the Dum Dum Girls’ hands is a gritty guitar experience. While I was hoping for a reverb based set, what we get instead is old-fashioned garage rock. ‘Hey Sis’ has a punky sound, while ‘Catholicked’ is a Bangles-style fun number. ‘I Will Be’ is fast and fun and ‘Oh, Mein M’ is another punky number. On ‘Yours Alone’ Dee Dee sounds like Chrissie Hynde. ‘Bhang Bhang, I’m a Burnout’ pushes a fast punky bass line played by gorgeous tattooed red head Bambi to the front. ‘Jail La La’ again is reminiscent of the Bangles while ‘Baby, Don't Go,’ is a slow, sad blues number. ‘It Takes One Night’ is again garage-based, while ‘Everybody's Out’ is a very moody number. ‘Rest of Our Lives’ closes a very fast and punky set in furious, full on style.
