Straight-to-the-point and distortion-friendly rock on latest EP from New York noise trio, A Place to Bury Strangers

Brooklyn’s trio A Place to Bury Strangers wear their influences firmly on their sleeves and the references to the likes of the Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and the shoegazing ilk of the likes of Ride and Slowdive. Their debut was little more than a melting pot of their wall-of-sound influences that had the likes of British drone rock and 60s girl groups fed through a bank of effects pedals and the amps cracked up to overload. Last year’s second album ‘Exploding Head’ kept the same blue-print and same level of ear-shattering intensity and noise but (fortunately) saw the band broaden out their sound more, adding more light and shade to the otherwise blitzkrieg assault. ‘Ego Death’, taken from their last album, comes in a straight-to-the-point edit version and is pretty much what you’d expect from A Place to Bury Strangers: as if Loop were covering ‘Funhouse’ through a vast array of effects pedals whilst Nine Inch Tails practised next door. Which is no bad thing. The other remixes featured – one by Ryan Jones and Parag Bhandari, one by Allen Bickle – are suitable different enough to hold attention too but either way ‘Ego Death’ is one of the more aggressive aspects to the band.
