intro
Undemanding and relaxing first album under his own name for former Boo Radleys front man Martin Carr
Martin Carr was better known as the guitarist and main songwriter in the Boo Radleys. This is an album of mellow acoustic tracks, which is quite pleasant on a first listening but it didn't awaken any sense of excitement. Musically I can't fault it, and the lyrics are diverse and interesting. It also improved with listening, so perhaps it's just a slow burner. I did enjoy second track 'Darwin's Tree' which appeared to be cleverly written ode to evolution. On 'Tired and Broke' and 'Black and Blue' I loved the guitar at the beginning and the forlorn lyrics. 'Goldrush '49 'was a sweet song of coming of age with a joyous refrain of California. A couple of tracks didn't appeal to me, but on the whole it's an undemanding and relaxing album that mixes Americana with a bit of shoe gazing and some soulful lyrics.
