intro

Enjoyable psychedelic garage rock from the Pyramids, the side project of the Archie Bronson Outfit's Sam Windett and Mark Clevelkand, which nevertheless sounds a little too much the same as their main group

What’s in a name? Not much it would seem if you’re either of theArchie Bronson Outfit’s the Cardinal (Sam Windett) and Arp (Mark Cleveland). During the sessions for the Archie Bronson Outfit’s second album 'Derdang Derdang' the pair formed the splinter group, the Pyramids, but basically kept the same musical formula. In fact, there’s not a lot of difference. Essentially it’s the same squalling blues cranked out in the garage with a little chaser of psychedelic overtones on the side. And things get off to a cracking start with the opening 'Pyramidy' and then 'A White Disc of Sun'. Both are frantic and sweaty (and rather lustful) and grab the listener by the scruff of the neck and force them to pay attention. And the duo crank it up a notch on the single 'Hunch Your Body, Love Somebody' and after a lull with 'Guitar Star' crank it up once more with 'A Gala in the Harbour of Your Heart'. It’s all heady stuff and really there’s nothing much that’s not to like. But there’s that little niggardly doubt about just what was the point of it all. Musically the Pyramids don’t really sound so much different from ABO. Sure, 'The Pyramids; is cut from a darker hue than either of ABO’s albums and it’s a little more experimental at times but essentially it is all but ABO in name. Some authors have stated that when they have written under a different name that, perhaps surprisingly, their writing style changes. That’s not the case here with the Pyramids, its business as usual. A change of name might have given the pair the chance to stretch out a little and experiment more, try out a few new thing or ideas. There lots on 'The Pyramids' that is well worth the asking price but there is that sense of it being a missed opportunity.
