intro
Impressive long-awaited debut album from Aberdonian garage rockers the Needles, whose influences extend from Nirvana and Guns ‘n Roses to the Beach Boys
The Needles have been around for some years, yet 'In Search of the Needles' is their first full length album. Their songs are tight and get straight to the point without giving you a chance to decide what you think of them. Instant hooks and catchy sing-along tunes is what the Needles have obviously been perfecting in the years since they first formed back in the late 90's. They are so wonderfully British with this Brit-pop tinged rock. One thing I love about their songs is that their song titles and lyrics are very 'Ronseal' in that they are exactly what they say they are. There are no quirky titles here. You can rest assured that the chorus of 'Under the City' goes along the lines of “..under the city I can live..” , while 'Devil at Your Door' along with pretty much the rest of the album carries on this trend. This just adds to the fantastic, unpretentious simplicity of the Needles. With a range of influences that extends from the hard rock riffs of Nirvana and Guns ‘n Roses to the Beach Boys and other 60’s style rock ‘n roll acts with their harmonies and sunny anthems, right through to the real un- mistakable British-ness of the likes of Terrovision, they have nailed it and perfected their craft. Aberdeen natives, Dave Dixon (guitar/vocals), Paul Curtiss (bass), Richey Wolfe (keyboards/vocals) and drummer Johnny Wolfe, have created an instantly classic sounding album. Lead single 'Summer Girls' set the tone in mid August when it was released and from that moment on it was clear that the wait was well worth it. Almost every song could be a potential summer festival anthem for years to come. Songs like 'Girl I Used to Know', 'Poison Ivy' and 'Delivery Man' have you singing the chorus and forgetting any woes you may have had by halfway through the song. There are only a handful of bands that can do that without being irritating or throw away. The Needles are one of them. It is quite obvious that 'In Search for the Needles' was well worth it and the world really does seem a sunnier place because of this.
