intro
At London's Barfly, Anthony Strutt is impressed by a set from former Strangelove frontman Patrick Duff which consists enitely of new songs
I haven't seen Patrick Duff for a while, but he always has had a firm place in my heart. Tonight I'm off to see Mark Eitzel in concert, but Patrick is also playing London as well, so I stop off to see him first. My first introduction to both of their bands was at The Forum, back in '94 when the American Music Club toured with Patrick's band Strangelove. Tonight's show at The Barfly is stunning, in which Patrick plays a strong set that lasts just an one hour. When Patrick comes on stage he tells the crowd "Give me a welcome. It's nice to be welcomed, and we like to be shown respect. All of us. " He previews mostly new material in his 11 song set . There is cover of the Stooges 'I Wanna be Your Dog' which is better than the original if that is possible, 2 songs from his solo album 'Luxury Problems' and the 8 remaining songs are brand new songs showing that Patrick Duff still has a lot more to say, and that, when musicians get up on stage to engage us with company, we must show respect. After all that's why musicians do it. It's not background music. If you want to talk through a concert go and see David Gray or something like that. Patrick shows no sign of losing his talent for creative writing, and all the new songs are getting stronger in subject matter and depth. I can't wait to hear the studio versions of these numbers.
