intro
'The Gentleman Adventurer' is Ian McNabb's 7th solo album, and is being self-released as an internet only release. Anthony Strutt examines a prolific record by one of Liverpool's "most important and under rated songwriters"
'The Gentleman Adventurer' is Ian McNabb's 7th solo album, and the 3rd on his own Fairfield label. Unlike any previous McNabb release, and unlike his last studio album, the wonderful 'Ian McNabb', this one doesn't rock like a bastard. 'The Gentleman Adventurer' is a softer record, but just as prolific as any of McNabb's other albums with some very clever observations. Check out the 6th track, 'Lady by Degrees', a track that will help you win the woman of your heart's desire, and the 9th track, 'German Soldier's Helmet circa 1943', one of the best songs that you will ever hear, and which is very different. This is fine songwriting indeed. On the whole, despite being recorded in a top Liverpool studio, 'The Gentleman Adventurer' has a home feel to it. The album comes in two parts, and has a half time break, Ian says, so that you put the kettle on or have a pee. Over the course of 14 tracks, Ian reminds us why he was one of the most important and under rated songwriters to ever come out of the Liverpool 80's scene, and why he continues to be so. The second part of the album is a bit more upbeat and rocks a little bit more, But, to be real honest, you will get the most out of McNabb's albums after you have seen him live. Keep your girlfriends away though, as they will probably fall for his Jim Morrison looks and Scouse charm. With the record though, live with it and let it grow on you ! If you like one Ian McNabb album, you will, like with Neil Young, love them all.
