One thing that has to be said is that Kieran Hebden keeps himself busy! As a core member of Fridge and doing his own thing as FourTet, he has released two full lengths and at least 2 or 3 singles this year. And the boy don't make no junk neither! The first FourTet full length, 'Dialogue', spent the better part of a year in my car CD changer. The diversity of sounds on that album made it seem like I was always hearing something new in the songs no matter how many times I listened to it. And I find that pretty rare when it comes to "electronic" music, most of which seems to be either too self regulated (the style is rigidly defined) or too temporary (two weeks old is too old). What sets FourTet apart is the way in which acoustic guitars, strings, sitars, pianos, and other non-electronic instruments are layered on top of the programmed beats and electronic elements. It gives the music a richness and warmth that many electronic and even other instrumental bands seem to lack. FourTet also covers a wide spectrum of moods - from ambient, sleepy tracks to jazzy, coolness to wacked out electro to 4-4 housey stuff that could almost work in a club if it were a bit more boring and had a diva vocal thrown in (aiya!). I listen to a fair bit of dance and electronic music and I would have to put FourTet amongst a short list of those whose tracks stand up to the test of time. I listened to 'Dialogue' as I wrote this and it still sounds just as good as before and I'm sure 'Pause' will still be hitting the turntable a year from now too. While samplers and computers alone can be employed to create tracks, it takes a musician to create music. Kieran Hebden is a musician.
