Right after Chemikal Underground's 5th. Birthday, comes Suckle with their first release on the label. Scheduled for release in early June is the album 'Against Nurture', and this is preceeded by a single "To Be King". If this track is the standard to go by for the debut album, then Suckle may equal The Delgados' status soon... "To Be King" is an anthem of a sort already. On the flipside , there is a real treat; the eerie "Kiss My Feet", which has a misleading intro, likely to be thought out by the drummer, Kenny. All comparisons fall short, but as Suckle records for Chemikal Underground, it is hard to see their music apart from the Delgados'. Suckle's songs are more individual though, and less epic. Both bands have in common a retrospective theme. Suckle have a shortstory-telling quality that is both direct and gentle, a combination that one rarely finds. On record, Suckle, who are by the way a six-piece, vary the instrumentation and production. And the band offers new menus all the time. Frances, one of Suckle's singers, used to be in The Vaselines, while Kenny drummed on Heads of Dead Surfers when he was in Long Fin Killie. Certainly no orthodox line-up, Suckle. Expect a 2nd. Session for them for John Peel in 2 or 3 weeks' time.

Against Nature (2001) |
Suckle's debut album 'Against Nurture' album is upright, tender and outspoken. Since it is released by Chemikal Underground, it's inevitable not to see Suckle apart from those other bands on that lab |
