New Jersey's finest folk-pop trio have brought out something very substantial here. Ever thought, a Yo La Tengo track lasting over 17 minutes, "A Night in Hoboken", could be excellent? It is on this new album. Yo La Tengo's tenth lp is kind of surprising because every track seems to fall in the right place. "And Then..." drags you in with "Everyday", which is unsettling at start, then, once you're settled and comfortable, won't let you leave until the aforementioned epic at the end. It's concept is love and life, but individual tracks stand out on their own strength. A subtle production, yet rich in effects ! Try to imagine Phil Spector having a go at triphop ! Label Blah Blah describe this a great album for the winter, but it's actually more like springfever to us, North-Europeans. And to add to that, I should mention the hit-potential of the only cover version on "And Then..."; "You Can Have It All", which will be a nice companion to your summer doldrums. Very poppy'n doowoppy. Safe present for birthdays too! For those who gave up on Yo La Tengo a few years back. ! Cryptic self-criticism this !
