Belouis Some had bleached blonde hair, had supported Queen at Knebworth and his song was a banger. It had the kind of lyrics that even when I was far too innocent to even be thinking about putting a cigarette between my lips, the cogs in my tiny mind were already whirring. The first edit of Storm Thorgerson’s video I saw was before the watershed. It had two backing singers who were the epitome of slinky and reminded me of the animated pneumatic backing singers in the 'Kind of Magic' video by the aforementioned Queen. Then, one night, I saw the ‘other’ version. My eyes left my head on stalks 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?' style. Nope, it wasn’t the full-frontal nudity (although I was a teenager so we can cut me a bit of slack). It was watching a video unashamedly match the music. This was the first time I saw female pleasure depicted not just from the male gaze perspective. Some took his clothes off for one. For another the women were shown touching themselves for their own enjoyment. I’d as yet not seen that anywhere. Designed, in part, to play in nightclubs it took the more deliberate titillation of Duran Duran’s 'Girls On Film', and gave it a darker edge. Both looked great on the walls of a club but Imagination felt that little bit more real, dangerous and the right amount of dirty.
