intro
Excellent alternative pop from Melbourne-based band RVG who have created something that is familiar and new in equal measures on this third album
RVG have delivered two fine albums already since their arrival on the alternative music scene in 2017, and, whilst Covid stunted their momentum when the second album 'Feral was released in April 2020, there should be nothing holding them back now. 'Brain Worms' is the perfect album to remind the world just how good RVG are and the title could have more aptly been 'Ear Worms' as every single track has the quality to lodge itself in the listener’s subconscious. Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, the band have a sound that takes the best bits of both the UK’s 80’s indie-pop scene and native bands such as The Triffids and The Go-Betweens to create something that is familiar and new in equal measures. Opening up with the instant 'Common Ground', which nods towards Starsailor at their absolute best, sets the album off in fine style before 'Midnight Sun' ups the tempo slightly. Indeed the album does seem to have a good mix of gentler songs such as the aforementioned 'Common Ground', 'You’re The Reason' and 'Tambourine' and more strident tracks like 'Midnight Sun', 'Squid' and the title track 'Brain Worms' as well a kind of more mainstream dance floor number in 'Nothing Really Changes that could easily have been a Prince song from 30 years ago. I know that we are only halfway through it, but I reckon this could be the best alternative pop album of the year. With The Ashes coming up I hope it is the only Aussie triumph though!
