intro
Remarkable covers collection from Mathias Korn and Toby Goodshank of songs by American country artist Roger Miller
Whilst many of us have very few memories of the two years of the pandemic, it gave others time to reflect and, in some cases, time to do things they have always wanted to, In the case of Mathias Korn and Toby Goodshank this was to make an album of covers of songs by American country artist Roger Miller. Miller is probably best known for ‘King of the Road’, as well as writing the songs, and providing the voice of the Allan-a-Dale character, in Disney’s version of ‘Robin Hood’. Miller’s self-destructive lifestyle of addiction led to his early death in 1992 aged just 56. During his life he had a brief period of success with his more serious music, but is better known for his novelty songs He remains popular particularly amongst musicians due to his unusual song writing style bringing a pop sensibility to country music. Mathias Korn and Toby Goodshank have recorded a mix of both his serious and novelty songs for this album and have rearranged them to features a lot more instruments than the original songs, including stylophone and Omnichord. This never sounds cluttered or overdone. Most songs stick very closely to their original country theme, whilst others, such as ‘Fair Swiss Maiden’ are revitalised with a nod to the original. I’d forgotten how much I liked ‘King of the Road’ until I listened to this, a reminder of my parents’ Radio 2 weekend listening. Having seen the tracks performed live in Manchester recently, along with Miller songs not featured on the album, you can see their affection for him shining through as they create new interpretations of his songs and music, a celebration of his legacy.
