intro
Fifth LP which captures the present difficult times from experimental Manchester trio.Virginia Wing
'private LIFE' is a contemporary take of some sorts on soul music involving mournful words over dreamy pop experiments. It is inspired as well by 1990s new wave and further back in time by Liverpool's infamous Lori & The Chameleons and Big In Japan. This fifth album Virginia Wing is quite accomplshed as Virginia Wing reflect on the troubled Year 2020 with eerie sound diversions. Locked in at home and developing compulsive habits, Virginia Wing's. claustrophobic avant-garde noodlings and grand vibe make an off kilter combination. "Money in your pocket is a remedy for every crime" reads one of singer Alice Merida Richards' more optimistic lines. Too old to be accused of weltschmerz, the feeling of being made to stand still in your social life - "No more neighbours' greetings and birthdays" - bubbles through on most songs. As in good soul music, the music played on the instruments comes to the rescue. Awash with quirky sidesteps, there is plenty of saturation and satisfaction in Virginia Wing's sound. I'm puzzled what I'd make of 'private LIFE' in a few years' time. Right now, music is, however, the consolation.
