intro
Lush seventh album from critically-acclaimed folk artist Laura Marling which is written for her fictional daughter
Laura Marling is now 30. She has put together quite a portfolio of work since she first started out on the West London folk-pop scene that also gave us Mumford & Sons and many more. Back in those days she was sometimes refused access to her own gigs because she looked underage - but she is no longer a callow teenager. Her performances are very mature and impressive. She's comfortable delivering stripped-down pop, rock or country and has an easy relationship with her audiences. Laura describes 'Song for Our Daughter' as a deliberate step away from personalised, confessional song-writing and she stresses that the child in the title is entirely fictional. Recently returned from living in Los Angeles, she recorded the album in the basement of her London home. Her lush songs, augmented by acoustic guitar, synths and Rob Moose's chamber strings, are perfectly crafted. She says the album was in part inspired by her many years of listening to Paul McCartney's solo work. It is a telling homage – and I am sure the former Beatle would be pleased with that.
