intro
Gorgeous combination of chamber and spaghetti western music on new album from German experimental act Kammerflimmer Kollektief
This ensemble's name is a play on words. It's deep, meaning in German, kollek 'tief' and not collective (kollektiv). Kammerflimmer is a term from heart surgery to top misinterpretations. This so-called Kollektief hails from Karlsruhe, the judicial capital of Germany. Kammerflimmer Kollektief have built up a reputation since the late 1990s. They have ten albums under their belt, and some of those I must admit I dismissed. Whilst undoubtedly gifted Freewheeling instrumentalists, I have often felt they had little to 'say'. Nevee mind the preposterous album title, because this album has many moments of gorgeous chamber music. On this occasion, the aggressive juxtaposition of Thomas Weber's guitars works well with Johannes Frisch's percussion. The franzied noise does seem to lead to sonic realms on the album's second track, 'Discharged Quauhnahuac'. Scattered in style though on this album are also frantic little electronic glitches and scratches. Like lead instruments, these sounds gully deep through the orchestration which occasionally tries to maintain a conventional sound. Pleasantly disturbing whilst trying to break new ground, Kammerflimmer Kollektief achieve several brilliant moments. Is it Clint Eastwood on 'Blessed Ermenonville' - the closing track on the album? Either way, they have added a welcome sauce to their spaghetti music. File between Ennio Morricone and David Lynch. It is not officially established yet, but it is in that league of order.
